Undergraduate Professional Tracks

The concentrations detailed below offer a professional track option for their program. Students opting into the professional track will complete all of the standard concentration requirements as well as at least one (non-credit-bearing) internship experience approved by the department. While professional tracks are available to all Brown undergraduate students in the below departments, international students who would like internship experiences in the US as part of their academic plan, should consider these pathways.

The requirements for professional tracks include all those of each of the standard concentrations and/or tracks with which it is associated, as well as the following:

Students must complete at least one full-time professional experience doing work that is related to their concentration program, totaling 2-6 months. In cases where students do more than one internship experience to meet this requirement, each internship must be at least one month long in duration. Such work is normally done at a company, but may also be at a university under the supervision of a faculty member. Internships that take place between the end of the fall and the start of the spring semesters cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.

International students who plan to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) to complete their professional track internship requirements through U.S.-based opportunities must first declare their concentration before requesting CPT approval.

On completion of each professional experience, the student must write and upload to ASK a reflective essay about the experience, to be approved by the student's concentration advisor, addressing these questions:

  • Please discuss your internship experience in relation to your coursework at Brown (For example, which courses and topics were you able to apply? Which courses or topics did you wish you had taken or explored before embarking on your internship experience?
  • What insights did you gain from the experience that couldn't be obtained through coursework?
  • Would you like to continue this type of work upon graduation? Explain.

Students should meet with their concentration advisor to discuss any additional concentration-specific guidelines and deadlines that will facilitate the timely completion and review of these requirements.
